Trucking Tops $700 Billion Revenue Mark

Trucking industry revenue set a record last year, reaching $700.4 billion, American Trucking Associations reported.  Employment in the industry continues to top 7 million annually, and the number of carriers now is above 1.3 million, or 68 times the amount in 1980 when trucking was deregulated.  Read more here.

Roadcheck 2015 Inspection Spree Set For Early June, CVSA Releases Checklists For Drivers, Carriers

Roadcheck, the annual inspection blitz done by a joint effort of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and others, has been scheduled for June 2-4, 2015.  CVSA has published a tip sheet for carriers and drivers in preparation for this year’s Roadcheck.  Read more here.

Trucking and Rail Industries Turn State Troopers Into Unwitting Lobbyists

A fight is playing out as Congress prepares to take up renewal of the Highway Trust Fund, which finances billions of dollars in projects for road construction, bridge repair and other infrastructure programs.  While the trucking industry will look for a way to insert language into the highway funding bill that allows bigger trucks, the railroad industry will be fighting to quash such a move.  The fund runs out of money May 31.  Read more here.

So, what are these CSA Scores all about?

A carrier’s safety scores are publicly available, a company can be scrutinized by entities other than law enforcement. Having poor scores reflects in the cost of insurance a company will be offered. It can also result in loss of business as brokers and freight-forwarders can look at safety performance and choose not to use a company based on their scores.  They are also a guide to where a carrier needs to make improvements in their safety and compliance.  Read more here.

FMCSA Creates CSA App

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced a new smartphone app that will give the public access to carrier safety data on their mobile devices. Trucking Freight Volumes Look Good Going Into 2015

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy,  According to ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello, “Freight volumes look good going into 2015.”  In an interview with Landline Magazine a representative of Stifel Nicolaus transportation and logistics research group said that the trucking industry is poised for another round of rate increases in 2015.

$18 Million in US Freight Stolen Last Fall

Cargo thieves were busy in the fall, stealing more than $18 million in tractor trailer loads of US freight between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2014.  Van freight and reefer freight appear to have topped the list.  Electronics stolen were worth an average of $417,250 per load.  Read more here:  http://bit.ly/1IPTrUr
